“Catch the Reading Bug,” Haynie Library’s summer reading program, continued on June 12 with a program all about butterflies.
Assistant librarian Rebekah Husted read “Butterfly, Butterfly” to the 63 children at the program before introducing Charlene Wiseman, a science teacher at Prague High School.
Wiseman talked to the children about catching and observing butterflies and other kinds of bugs.
“It can be really easy and fun to catch bugs,” Wiseman said.
One simple way to attract butterflies and watch them is to put a shallow plate or tin with a bit of honey or syrup in the bottom on your porch, Wiseman said. Butterflies and other insects will be attracted to the syrup and will come close to the house.
The children also got to see some of the bugs Wiseman has collected over the years.
Next week, the reading program will feature Barbara Jones, who will present a finger puppet show about bugs. The program is at 3 p.m. on Thursday, June 19.
