Do you know how to tell the difference between a “true bug” and the insects we usually call bugs? After a presentation by a special guest at Haynie Library’s first summer reading program of the year, over 50 local children do.
Last week’s guest was Dr. George Driever, an area extension pest management specialist with the Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service. Driever explained how “good bugs” like ladybugs and praying mantises can help in the garden or with controlling other bugs.
“The larvae love to eat the juicy little aphids,” Driever said. “They’re like little watermelons.”
After Driever’s presentation, the children went outside to release 300 ladybugs into a field behind the library. After the release, children could view Driever’s bug collections and each received a goodie bag from the library.
“We are so excited that so many children came,” library director Pamela Batson said. “I think this was the biggest program we’ve ever had. We hope next week’s program will be just as big!”
